Huwei pig farm is equipped with negative pressure ventilation and water curtain, drainage openings on solid and slatted floors, manure scraper systems, and rainwater and wastewater separation systems. Pig manure and urine is transported by independent and closed sewage pipes to a vertical anaerobic digestion tank, not only eliminating odors, but also turning the waste into biogas slurry and residues. The biogas waste could be further reused as organic compost applied in farms or soils to reduce use of chemical fertilizers. The modern pig housing not just reduces water consumption by 75%, but also develops sustainable pig production
"In addition to recycling and reuse, Huwei pig farm implements animal-electricity symbiosis to save energy, reduce carbon emissions, and speed up development of renewable energy," TSC said. Pig manure and urine after fermentation produces methane (a greenhouse gas); thus, in order to alleviate methane emissions, the pig farm installs 100KW biogas power generation facilities to convert biogas into green energy generated total of 650 kWh every year. The installed capacity of solar panels on the pigpen roof is 2MW. The solar panels can lower temperature of the pig house as well as generate electric power which is up to 2,000 kWh every year. Combining biogas and solar power, Huwei piggery aims to generate 2,650 kWh of green energy annually which helps reduce carbon emissions of 1,325 metric tons of CO2e.
"Reducing carbon emissions is a global trend in livestock production," TSC emphasized. According to Taiwan’s Pathway to Net-Zero Emissions in 2050 published in March this year, methane (CH4) ranks third (1.67%) in all of greenhouse gas emissions in Taiwan. Although methane emissions only accounted for a relatively small percentage, it has 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide in causing global warming. Since agriculture and animal husbandry is one of major sources of methane emissions, lowering carbon emissions and saving energy are key issues for transformation of livestock husbandry. TSC has been implementing the reconstruction project of 13 existing pig farms since 2018. After Huwei pig farm, the rest of 12 piggeries will be successively completed by 2023. The company expects the new pig farms increase productivity, promote resource reuse, and further accelerate transformation towards net zero by 2050.
