The EPA amended the Prohibited Components in Environmental Agents and Methods for Their Detection in response to the Minamata Convention on Mercury, which has banned the production, import or export of pesticides containing mercury since 2020. Authorized by Article 7 of the Environmental Agents Control Act, the Prohibited Components in Environmental Agents and Methods for Their Detection was amended by adding mercury and methylmercury to be among the prohibited components in environmental agents. The maximum content of these components has been set to be 10 Method Detection Limit (MDL).

The EPA points out that there is currently no registered environmental agent in Taiwan that contains mercury. Therefore, banning mercury and methylmercury in environmental agents will not significantly impact the domestic industry. The amendment was to comply with the Minamata Convention on Mercury and be in line with international management practices. It will further ensure public health and environmental safety in Taiwan.
