To reduce plastic waste in the oceans, in 2016 the EPA tightened relevant policies by limiting and reducing the use of plastics at their sources. On 13 February 2018, the Action Plan of Marine Debris Governance in Taiwan was announced by the EPA, accompanied by representatives from NGOs concerned about marine environmental preservation, the National Museum of Marine Science & Technology, and others from academia. The details include a total ban by 2030 on single-use plastics such as shopping bags, utensils, beverage containers, and straws. The Action Program is also working on banning plastic straws starting in 2019, to make Taiwan the first country to limit the use of plastic straws.
