These actions have resolved in one stroke major pollution headaches that had persisted for twenty or thirty years.
Looking ahead towards the new lunar year, Hau pointed out that key future tasks will include the three-stage phase out of the use of plastic bags and disposable dishes, establishment of environmental industrial parks (such as recycling demonstration zones), thoroughgoing remediation of river and waterway pollution, ongoing implementation of total air pollution emission controls in the Kaohsiung-Pingtung region, and the country’s response to international environmental protection conventions (such as the Kyoto Protocol).
